How to create an operating system for creativity and innovation

This is a non-technical article, despite the title, that looks at creativity and innovation through the lens of intrinsic motivation. It is meant to serve as a high-level introductory article. Subsequent articles will be more technical and build on top of some of the ideas articulated here.
